Think of Perplexity as three routes, each with different rules.
- Public-web discovery. Perplexity reads the open web. Your product pages can show up in answers with no application and no contract.
- A merchant data program. Perplexity has offered a way to share product data directly. The terms we hold tie it to real duties: accurate data at all times, business verification, shipping within your stated lead time.
- In-chat checkout. Perplexity’s current help page calls this Instant Buy. It’s limited to US users and to merchants “compatible with our agentic checkout experience”.
The catch: the Merchant Program Terms (last updated May 28, 2025) were live on our October 27, 2026 re-check, but they still say you request access by email. There’s no self-serve sign-up. The merchant entry points we tested pointed either to Merchant Program marketing copy or to a sign-in for a different product, so don’t plan around a stable public application form. This guide sorts what’s documented, what was only announced, and what’s unknown. Checked on 2026-10-27; re-check before acting.
The route and obligation checklist
Each row is one route. “Status” says what kind of source backs it: a current help page, a launch announcement, the merchant terms, or not documented.
| Route | What Perplexity says, and the status | What it asks of you | Still unknown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public-web discovery | Product listings are ranked on criteria “similar” to how sources are ranked: authority and relevance. Current help page | Nothing to sign. Keep product pages crawlable and the facts readable as text | What “authority” means for a product. Whether a page Perplexity cites becomes a product card |
| Shopify platform integration | 2024 launch: discovery “powered by platform integrations including Shopify”, for Shopify stores that sell and ship to the US. Launch announcement | Not documented | Whether it still runs. Shopify’s current AI-channel help page doesn’t name Perplexity |
| Merchant data program | 2024 launch: free, for “large retailers”, to share product specs. Launch announcement. Terms dated May 28, 2025: request access by email, then send data by API, SFTP or CSV. Merchant terms, live on re-check | Accurate, complete product data at all times. Business details and verification. Per-product return criteria | Whether the program is open, to whom, and through what door. No public application form |
| In-chat checkout | Instant Buy for US users, compatible merchants only. Orders go straight to the merchant. Current help page | Accept and fulfil orders. Ship within your stated lead time. Answer within 72 hours (merchant terms) | How a merchant becomes “compatible”. Which categories are covered |
| Earlier checkout names | Buy with Pro (2024, Pro users in the US). PayPal-powered checkout (2025, merchant of record). Launch announcements | Historical. Don’t plan around these names | Whether a PayPal merchant account changes anything today. Not documented |
| Paid placement | Help page: listings are set by “relevance and ratings”, and advertisers can’t pay to appear in “related products”. 2024 launch: the merchant program is separate from sponsored questions. Current help page and announcement | Nothing | How sponsored questions appear next to product cards. Not documented in what we read |
Two rows matter most for a small Shopify store. Public-web discovery is the only route you fully control. And the merchant data program, by its own launch wording, was aimed at “large retailers”. Nothing current says that changed.
Route 1: public-web discovery
Perplexity’s help center gives the clearest statement we have of how products are picked. It ranks product listings much as it ranks sources, on authority and relevance. It refines picks with “past searches, interactions, and saved preferences”. It says it’s “more likely to recommend merchants who provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing, and specifications”.
That last line is useful, but it’s Perplexity describing itself, not a measured effect. It names four kinds of detail. It doesn’t say how much each counts, or whether “provide” means on your page, in a feed or both.
What you can do without anyone’s permission:
- Put the deciding facts in text on the product page. Availability, price, the specification a shopper filters on, the review summary. A spec that lives only in an image or a hidden tab is harder for any reader to use.
- Keep the page open to crawlers. Shopify notes robots.txt rules are advisory. Blocking a crawler there affects only open-web discovery, not data Shopify sends through its own catalog. We didn’t review Perplexity’s crawler documentation for this guide, so check its current bot names before editing robots.txt.
- Answer the shopper’s actual requirement. In our supplied-snippet simulation, an invented product with vague copy was almost never picked, and stated facts got it considered. It won when those facts answered a stated need that competing listings didn’t. That’s a simulation with API models, not Perplexity, but it’s the right instinct for any answer engine.
The route checklist doesn’t give you Perplexity “SEO tactics”, because nothing official establishes any. The launch posts describe what Perplexity built. They aren’t evidence that a particular page change moves a product into a card.
Route 2: the merchant data program
Here’s the paper trail, in order.
| Date | What appeared | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| November 18, 2024 | Launch of a free Merchant Program “for large retailers to share their product specs”, with a sign-up form | Announcement. The sign-up path it described isn’t one we could follow |
| May 28, 2025 | Merchant Program Terms, “Last updated” date | Terms page live on our 2026-10-27 re-check. An earlier same-day check had returned not found, so re-read before relying on any clause |
| November 25, 2025 | New shopping launch with PayPal checkout. No new merchant sign-up described | Announcement |
| October 27, 2026 | perplexity.ai/merchants: one visit redirected to a Perplexity Computer ecommerce sign-in, another fetch returned Merchant Program marketing copy. Neither is a catalog-submission admin |
Observed by us, two fetches. Unstable |
So the terms are public, but the door isn’t clearly marked: access is by email request. If someone offers you a Perplexity merchant agreement, read it. The terms below are the May 28, 2025 version that was live on our check date.
What the terms ask of a merchant
| Area | What the May 28, 2025 terms say | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Getting access | Request access by email before accepting any order. Data may go in by API, SFTP or CSV files via S3 (section 2.1) | Admission is by request. It isn’t automatic |
| Data quality | Keep product data “accurate and complete at all times”, in Perplexity’s formats, at least as complete as in your other channels (2.1) | Your Perplexity feed can’t be a thinner copy of your Shopify catalog |
| What “product data” covers | Title, price, description, brand, model, weight, stock, country of origin, shipping lead time, options and origin, dimensions, images, warranties, returns, warnings such as Proposition 65, and certificates (definitions) | A long list. Most of it is what a careful product page already states |
| Business identity | Business name, address, phone, tax information, email, and whether you make, import or resell. May be verified by a third party. Missing or wrong details can lead to suspension (2.2) | Have your business documents ready before you apply |
| Display | Perplexity has “sole discretion” over whether to show any product, and may reformat or edit your data (3.1) | Joining doesn’t promise a single impression |
| Pricing | Price must be accurate, not misleading, and one you actually offer elsewhere (3.3) | No Perplexity-only inflated “compare at” pricing |
| Orders | Accept and fulfil every order placed by customers or by Perplexity on their behalf. Answer Perplexity’s questions within 72 hours (4.1) | You need someone watching email |
| Shipping | Ship within your stated lead time, send tracking, deliver new and defect-free items, no inserts that steer buyers to other channels (5.2, 5.3) | Your stated lead time becomes a promise |
| Customer data | Use it only to ship the order. No marketing to those buyers (5.5) | These buyers don’t join your email list by default |
| Returns and service | State per product which returns you accept. Match the most favourable return and service terms you offer anywhere else (6.1, 6.2) | Not a rule that you must take buyer’s-remorse returns. It’s a rule that you must say which ones you take |
The terms also include a prohibited-products list (Exhibit A), which covers supplements, among other things. Check it before applying if you sell anything regulated.
Route 3: checkout inside Perplexity
Checkout has carried three names, and only one has a current help page.
| Name | Where it was described | Who it was for | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy with Pro | November 2024 launch | Perplexity Pro users in the US, “select products from select merchants” | Historical |
| PayPal-powered checkout | November 2025 launch | All US users. Retailers stay merchant of record | Announcement. The help center now files this under “Instant Buy + Buy with PayPal” |
| Instant Buy | Help Center, last modified October 26, 2026 | US users, except Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans. Compatible merchants only | Current help page |
The help page says orders “are securely sent directly to the merchant for fulfillment” and points shoppers to the merchant for shipping, pricing and delivery questions. It doesn’t say how a merchant becomes compatible, which categories are supported, or what a merchant pays. For merchants, those are the questions that matter, and they’re not documented in what we read.
A worked case: one hypothetical store
Hypothetical store, for illustration only: a Shopify store that sells a top-fill humidifier, ships to the US and Canada, has a few hundred reviews, and has never contacted Perplexity.
| Route | Applies? | Next step | Unknown that stays open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public-web discovery | Yes | Put the room size, the decibel figure with its setting, runtime per fill and price in the description text, not only in images | How Perplexity weighs any of them |
| Shopify integration | Maybe | Nothing to switch on that we can point to. Shopify’s current help doesn’t list Perplexity | Whether Perplexity reads Shopify data today |
| Merchant data program | Unclear | Don’t apply blind. If you’re offered an agreement, check it against the duties table above, especially lead times and returns | Whether a store this size is eligible, and where to apply |
| Instant Buy | Only if Perplexity treats the store as compatible | Nothing documented to do | How compatibility is decided |
| Canadian shoppers | Not documented | Assume the US-only checkout statements mean Canadian shoppers buy on your site | Whether Canadian users see product cards at all |
We checked this case against what the sources say. The duties come from the merchant terms, the US limit from the help page, and the Shopify line from the 2024 launch and Shopify’s current page. Nothing in it is a promise about results.
Notice what the store can act on today: one row. The rest is waiting on documentation. That’s the honest state of Perplexity’s merchant routes on our check date, and it’s why you shouldn’t pay anyone for “Perplexity merchant onboarding” until they show you the current agreement.
How this compares with other assistants
On ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, Shopify documents a catalog route with settings in the Shopify admin. On Perplexity, we found no equivalent current documentation. Our platform comparison lays the routes side by side. The siblings to this guide cover Copilot, Amazon’s assistant and Meta’s Muse. To check the product facts any of them would read, start with an AI visibility audit.
Your next step
Open your best-selling product page and look for the four details Perplexity says it favours: availability, reviews, pricing and specifications. Check each one is stated as text a crawler can read, not only in an image, a tab or an app widget. Write down the one specification your customers ask about most, and make sure it sits in the first lines of the description with its unit and condition. That’s the part of Perplexity you can work on without anyone’s approval.
